24-hour Urine Collection
This test helps us understand how your body is working over the course of a full day. It gives us important information about kidney function and protein levels, which can guide safe and thoughtful care for you and your baby. It may feel a little inconvenient, but taking your time and following the steps carefully will give us the most accurate results.
What You’ll Need
Your collection container
A large cup for collecting urine. (Some people use a red-solo cup)
A place in the refrigerator or a cooler with ice to store the urine during collection
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Choose Your Start Time
Pick a time that works well for you (morning is often easiest)
2. Empty Your Bladder — Do NOT Save This First Urine
At your start time, urinate into the toilet
Do not collect this urine
Write down this time — this is your official start time
3. Collect ALL Urine for the Next 24 Hours
Every time you urinate after that, collect it
Pour it into the provided container
Do not miss any urine during this time
4. Store Properly
Keep the container refrigerated or on ice between collections
This keeps the sample stable and accurate
5. Finish at the Same Time the Next Day
At the exact same time you started (24 hours later), urinate one final time
Collect this last urine and add it to the container
Important Tips
Try not to spill or miss any collections — accuracy matters
If you accidentally miss a sample, call us for guidance
Stay hydrated as usual (don’t over- or under-drink)
Keep the lid tightly closed
After You Finish
Return the container to our office. Text Margie at 469-643-9433 when you’re heading in so she can prepare the sample and send it to Quest.
Try to return it as soon as possible after completing the test
