24-hour Urine Collection

This test helps us understand how your body is working over the course of a full day. It gives us important information about kidney function and protein levels, which can guide safe and thoughtful care for you and your baby. It may feel a little inconvenient, but taking your time and following the steps carefully will give us the most accurate results.

What You’ll Need

  • Your collection container

  • A large cup for collecting urine. (Some people use a red-solo cup)

  • A place in the refrigerator or a cooler with ice to store the urine during collection

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Choose Your Start Time

  • Pick a time that works well for you (morning is often easiest)

2. Empty Your Bladder — Do NOT Save This First Urine

  • At your start time, urinate into the toilet

  • Do not collect this urine

  • Write down this time — this is your official start time

3. Collect ALL Urine for the Next 24 Hours

  • Every time you urinate after that, collect it

  • Pour it into the provided container

  • Do not miss any urine during this time

4. Store Properly

  • Keep the container refrigerated or on ice between collections

  • This keeps the sample stable and accurate

5. Finish at the Same Time the Next Day

  • At the exact same time you started (24 hours later), urinate one final time

  • Collect this last urine and add it to the container

Important Tips

  • Try not to spill or miss any collections — accuracy matters

  • If you accidentally miss a sample, call us for guidance

  • Stay hydrated as usual (don’t over- or under-drink)

  • Keep the lid tightly closed

After You Finish

  • Return the container to our office. Text Margie at 469-643-9433 when you’re heading in so she can prepare the sample and send it to Quest.

  • Try to return it as soon as possible after completing the test
